Madeiran
embroidery began to be promoted in the middle of the 19th
century by the English through the implementation of
commercial activities.
It is known that in 1860 there were about a thousand
embroideresses in the island which shows the importance of
the activity. The wide variety of types of embroidery
contributes to their promotion. They are used as
decoration on hand towels, dresses, handkerchiefs, sheets
among others.
