This
is where the island’s discoverers first came ashore in 1419, and
it was also here, according to the legend, that a century earlier
the navigator Robert Machim found shelter, thus giving his name to
the municipality. The parishes of Caniçal,
Santo António da Serra, Água de Pena and Porto da Cruz form part
of Machico. With
its natural beauty, it is an important tourist resort of the island. |
