Ribeira Brava Vilage
Passing through green hills and stepped cultivated terraces we arrive at Ribeira Brava, whose 16th century parish church, dating from the most prosperous era of the sugar cane production, is richly decorated in that style.
There are some valuable paintings, sculptures and silverware to be admired. The ancient tradition of the festival of São Pedro (Saint Peter) on the 29th June was taken up here. The little procession boat, decorated with flowers and fishing equipment, carries the image of the saint and is followed by the centennial sword dance.
Due to their beauty and cultural interest, the celebrations attract many visitors. There are lots of places to visit: Museu do Cavalo (Horse Museum), Museo Etnográfico da Madeira and the Zona Desportiva Integrada (combined Sports Area.)
Leaving Ribeira Brava, you can opt for continuing in a westerly direction, passing Ponta do Sol, or in a northerly direction passing Serra de Água and Encumeada towards São Vicente.
